Industri mode Jepang telah lama terjepit di antara kepopuleran rancangan rumah mode Barat dan banjirnya produk murah dari negara Asia. Jadi, meskipun perancang mode Jepang mendapat tempat di dalam negeri, tetapi obsesi menembus pasar luar negeri tetap menjadi cita-cita yang sulit diwujudkan banyak perancang di sana.
Perancang senior yang berjaya di panggung internasional seperti Issey Miyake dan Yohji Yamamoto adalah keberhasilan langka yang sulit diikuti perancang Jepang generasi berikutnya.
Untuk mewujudkan obsesi menembus pasar dunia sekaligus menjadikan Tokyo titik penting industri mode internasional, Japan Fashion Week (JFW) yang digelar 31 Oktober-9 November lalu di Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery di Aoyama, dirancang menjadi motor penggerak industri mode Jepang.
Trotoar di sepanjang Aoyama dan Omotesando yang menjadi lokasi butik ternama seperti Christian Dior, Gucci, dan Prada dipenuhi spanduk JFW. Selama 10 hari, 53 perancang menggelar karya mereka, 35 perancang muda membuat pameran hasil kolaborasi dengan perusahaan tekstil, berlangsung simposium industri mode, kampanye J Groove untuk meningkatkan kecintaan pada produk dalam negeri, hingga seminar tren warna Asia.
JFW bertujuan membangun sinergi semua sektor terkait, dari industri tekstil di hulu hingga desainer di hilir. Dunia mode Jepang sebenarnya amat dinamis berkat karakter masyarakat kota besar seperti Tokyo, Osaka, dan Kyoto, yang sangat sadar mode, tetapi selama ini setiap sektor bekerja sendiri dan kolaborasi sebelumnya tidak terpikirkan.
Gentaro Noda, desainer pakaian pria ”Iliad” menuturkan, sejak tahun 2004 ia mempersiapkan promosi langsung karyanya di Paris atau Milan. ”Tetapi, ketika panitia menghubungi untuk ikut JFW dan menjamin akan hadir pembeli potensial dari luar, saya all out dengan koleksi musim gugur. Hasilnya di luar dugaan, saya mendapat enam pembeli dari London, Hongkong, dan Paris. Sekarang saya berkonsentrasi untuk JFW musim semi tahun depan,” tutur Noda, lulusan St Martin’s Fashion School, London.
